Welcome to the MLang

We are delighted that more and more of you are taking up the challenge of studying for this new and innovative degree, which was set up to cater for the most academically able students of Modern Languages. The Lancaster University MLang offers an exceptional opportunity to obtain an integrated Master’s degree in Languages and Cultures within four years of study in higher education.

After a year at Lancaster University studying French, German or Spanish alongside two other subjects, the second year of the degree is spent on a Year Abroad in a partner university. As well as attending courses and sitting examinations in the partner institution, our students write a Year Abroad project in the target language(s) for assessment by Lancaster. In the third year, students return to Lancaster to develop advanced oral and written language skills and study a range of specialist language specific and comparative culture modules. In their final year, MLang students become a part of the vibrant international postgraduate community of MA and PhD students in the department. They are able to choose from a wide range of MA modules to complement their researched dissertation on a topic of their choice.

With the study of three subjects in Year 1, a Year Abroad in Year 2, study at final year level in Year 3 and a Master's degree in Year 4, the academic, intellectual, personal and social challenges of studying for the MLang are many, but they also mean that this degree offers great opportunities for high level language study, immersion in one or two languages and cultures, as well as personal and intellectual development. Our MLang students often spark new initiatives and take on leadership roles among the students in the department, or in the university more widely, and the experiences they have gained as MLang students prepare them well for the world of work and for further study.
